Most of us do not feel old at 60 years old, but may in fact qualify for certain discounts based on our age. Remember to ask for pensioner discount programs wherever you go to pay for things, to be sure you are getting the best deals. Who doesn’t loive a discount or a bargian?

Here are some pensioner discounts from shopping and entertainment to holidays and Insurance. It’s always good to ask for a pensioner discount, even at large chain stores, you just never know! What is the worst that can happen, they say No, but they could just as well say “Yes, we have a pensioner discount program” 🙂

At what age are you considered a pensioner in South Africa?

You are conidered a pensioner as soon as you reach the age of 60 in South Africa. Most corporate employment contracts have a retirement age written into them which requires you to retire the month after you turn 60 years old or similar. This does not meaqn you “have to stop working”. In many cases the older more experienced staff members are kept on in a consulting or mentoring role to help with continuity and handover.

As a retired person, reducing your overheads may not only be necessary but because your situation has changed you should take stock of all of your overheads or monthly payments and find out firstly, which ones you are able to get reduced purely because you are over 60 years old and secondly, because of situation changes. This should form part of your financial plan for your retirement! It is a retirement benefit.

Retail and shopping discounts for pensioners

Retail outlets like Spar and Food Lovers markets are independently owned stores that have their own pensioner discounts days so be sure tyo get hold of your local store and ask what programs they have for over 60’s. Remember to always take your ID or drivers license with you.

Food Lovers Market have a great “find a store near you” link that works extremely well. It will give you the address and contact numbers instantly based on you are at the time.

Spar rewards and pensioner discounts >

The pensioner discounts at Spar are also branch specific but usually 5% on Tuyesdays. Be sure to check with your local Spar. 5% is not much but better than a kick in pants.

Pick & pay are a little schnoep with their pensioner discounts only offering 1 hour a week between 7am and 8am for pensioners! Not great Pick and Pay but again, better than a kick in the pants if you are an early riser and over 60 years old. Discounts are also 5% on Wednesdays at some branches so be sure to cvall your local Pick n Pay to ask about their pensioner discount program. Their website isnt great so just type pick n pay locations into Google and a list of the closest ones will come up on Google maps.

 Entertainment & Restasuants pensioner discounts

As an over 65, you are eligible for the pensioners discount at cinemas. Go to movies twice a month and thats saving R130, that’s pretty good financial advice wouldn’t you say? So many people do not take advantage of this, be it for vanity reasons or simply that they do not ask for a discount based on their age. It is half price for pensioners so go get it.

Ster Kinekor & NuMetro Seniors discounts

Both cinema groups have discounts for pensioners which range from 22% to 50% depending on the day and movie time. It’s best to ask at the cinema or take a look at their senior discount policies online.

Save 22% but always check the validity and times it is applicable before you go to the cinema.

Up to 50% off movies including through the ABSA rewards program.

Discount on Taste of Africa tours for pensioners is up to 45%.Perhaps you have never been on a tour of Soweto, take one it is a really fun day and you will have a fantastic experience.

Espresso has been a favorite spot to eat on 4th Ave in Parkhurst for decades and now the Express version mailny used for delivery orders but which has a sit down area and a very nice seated bar area with free Wifi and still some of the best Pizza in Town.

Holiday discounts for pensioners

Sanparks offers anyone over 60 years of age the retirement benefit of a discount of up to 40% and if you are going in a group of over 60’s simply give them a call first or you won’t be eligible. Great financial advice again. You will get a 20% retirement benefit discount on houseboat hire if you are a pensioner. This is a really fabulous way to enjoy a weekend or a few days, fully catered houseboats.

Many hotel groups value pensioners visiting their hotels, resorts and establishments. Pensioners are free to travel out of season, midweek and have disposable income to help fill those traditionally under requested times at hotels and resorts. For example, in Johannesburg, hotels cater mainly for business travellers so the weekends are often left open. It is a fantastic way to spend a weekend out of your day to day environment but still close to home.

Orion Hotels and resorts also offer great pensioner discount programs which include all in packages at some beautiful resorts like the coah house in Limpopo. At Bela Bela there is a full board package which is very reasonable for such a luxury hotel.

Individual resorts and hotels also offer discounts direct to the public for pensioners so it is always a great idea to call up a place you want to visit and ask if they have a pensioner discount program. The chances are they will have a program or offer you a discount simply because you asked for one.

Both Clicks and Dischem value their seniors customers by offering extra points and cashback on purchases using their loyalty cards. Pensioners generally spend a fair amount on health and medical related items and for this reason are able to get these excellent deals.
